1861-1865 colt revolver question?
my class just got done watching a movie on the civil war and the generals had revolvers, but the soldiers had rifles that you had to do the whole gun powder thing with, and the revolvers would fire round after round.
1: did those revolvers have shelled bullets?
2: if question 1 is yes: why didn`t they put shelled rounds in rifles, and when did they.
3: if question 1 is no: what kind of mechanism did the gun fire with?
Most of the revolvers at the time were cap and ball revolvers each chamber of the cylinder was loaded with a powder charge and then a round ball. Smith and Wesson had made their no 1 pistol just before the civil war, but was chambered only for a .22 rimfire cartridge.
One of the main reasons cartridge firearms were slow to be introduced during the war was supply. Troops armed with a cartridge rifle needed a ready supply of cartridges. Where troops are with muskets needed only powder, lead and caps. Powder lead and caps were already in the supply line and if needed could be sent to troops in need of hasty supply. Cartridge firearm couldn’t use the old powder and lead the muskets could and when they ran out of cartridges were at the mercy of resupply with the right cartridge.
Cartridge firearms like the Henry rifle (.44 Rimfire) and 1862 Spencer rifle (.56-56 Spencer) were issued in 1862 to Union soldiers. Later in 1863 the carbine started showing up in the hands of the Union army. These early cartridge military firearms were mostly lever action. The single shot trapdoor Springfield would show up in 1865 and be the first widely adopted cartridge firearm of the United States Army chambered for the .58-60 cartridge. Other cartridge firearm include the Burnside carbine & the Tarpley Breech loader carbine.
