Ideas For Colonial Style Costumes
It’s that time of year again: time to prepare for Halloween and think about what costume to wear. There are so many great costumes to choose from such as the traditional scary and bizarre that are associated with Halloween. However, there are other types of costumes that are not only great for Halloween but can be worn for other events throughout the year. One perennial idea is historical costumes. They never go out of fashion because they are, by definition, in the past.
You can choose any period of history that interests you, from any continent. There are some great Egyptian, Roman and medieval costumes. You don’t need to go so far into the past – twenties costumes are very popular. But why not choose a costume out of our own American history?
Here are some of the best costumes from our own history. They are perfect for historical reenactments and celebrations. Children can use them in school plays and parades.
Native American Indians
Native American indians were the original inhabitants of North America. Why not honor them by choosing one of their costumes to wear? A man can be a fearless warrior. A woman can also be a warrior or she can be a sexy indian maiden. A Pocohontas costume is also popular for women or girls. She usually has a suede style dress with fringing and sometimes beading. She has a beaded headpiece with a feather at the back. Indian braves also can wear a similar fringed sued outfit with a feathered headpiece. Moccasins and a tomahawk will finish off the outfit.
Colonial Costumes
There are so many ideas in this category from pilgrim costumes as well as well-known characters such as George Washington, Martha Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross. Other possibilties from this period are a British Redcoat uniform or a patriot soldier outfit from the Revolutionary war.
If you’re feeling creative, you could make your own costume after doing a bit of research. If you’re not handy with a needle and thread, you can easily find a costume online or from a costume shop.
