It is difficult to pinpoint why the Great War of 1914-1918 continues to cast such a long shadow over later generations. Discover the stories behind the battlefields of Flanders and the Somme for an important historical trip. The First World War will come alive with visits to cemeteries, battlefields and trenches, giving a realisation of the scale of human sacrifice during the war.
The many memorials and cemeteries of the fallen in and around Ypres draw thousands of visitors each year. Be sure to go to the ‘Last Post Ceremony’ in Ypres where each night, at 8pm the Last Post is played at the Menin Gate. which commemorates the men who were never found. Whilst in this area, take a tour around the Battlefield of Flanders to see the site where there was the greatest loss of British life – be sure to take some time to reflect whilst here.
Make sure you go to the Flanders Fields museum to give you a deeper insight into the relevance of the battlefield during WWI. A visit to this museum is more like an experience, which gives you a deeper understanding of what daily life was like during the war. It can be quite a difficult day that may have a profound impact on you.
Head to the Wellington quarries at Arras in France to see underground tunnels and chambers, which were used by the British Army, used during the battle of Arras in 1917. The existing network is of remarkable length and excellent condition. These undergrounds were also used by the British during World War One to install a small hospital.
Paris avoided German occupation throughout the First World War, but it was still an important city throughout the war. You’ll find Paris hotels close to many of the memorials in the centre of the city, so be sure to go to one of these to remember the dead.
Stay in one of the hotels near to famous battlesites to find out more about WWI. Try to stay somewhere tranquil to give you somewhere to reflect.
