how did attitudes to world war one change between 1914 and 1918?
in particular how did soldiers opinions of war change – i.e. how did what they expect it to be like compare with what actually happen; what was the opinion on propaganda it painted war to be an adventure did peoples opinions on propaganda change? were soldiers expecting the way they were treated e.g. shot at dawn – and did this treatment the overall attitude to war? thanks for all posts 
Disillusionment set in all the major European Armies by 1917
As the manpower shortage became more acute , older and older men were pushed into the front line to fill the gaps , The older men had not the enthusiasm of the younger men
In 1918 at Calais between 21- 26 July the 51st Highland Division rioted and many Military Police were thrown into the sea before the troops were finally brought to order .
The most important disturbance during the hostilities ( on the British side ) took place at Etaples , a base area , known to the troops as the `Bull Ring ` discipline was harsh , men would return to the front with wounds far from healed ” To get away from the Bull Ring ” . Rioting broke out in September , when Military Police guarding a bridge clashed with a crowd of soldiers forcing their way into town ,An N.C.O was shot Officers were manhandled .
In the French and German armies the situation was even worse . In the German lines the situation became even more critical , the deterioration of morale hastened the final collapse Desertions in the German Army increased , 4,000 German troops were interned in neutral Holland , in the last three months of the war 40,000 soldiers voluntarily gave themselves up to the Americans .
War weariness reached a peak when one entire trainload of German troops refused to go to the front on their arrival in Belgium .
By April 1917 the French Army was almost completely exhausted , desertions reached 21,871 by 1917 . The Poliu openly refused to attack , they would defend , but refused to take part in any futile assaults . In all 75 regiments of infantry and 23 battalions of chasseurs , 12 regiments of artillery were tainted with mutiny in the French army . Towards the end of the war, late 1918 , officers were convinced that the Armistice came just in time , believing the war would have ended under it`s volition
