On Having a Deeper Appreciation for Flamenco
Music and dance often go together and are a big part of every country’s culture because it serves many different intent for the people. Music indeed plays varying functions in different cultural settings; some utilize it for political purposes, some for religious worship, some use it to call down rain or to woo women during courtship.
Spain’s beginning is plenty, and as anticipated music plays a big part in it; the Roman culture was its main influence for hundreds of years which presented Ancient Greek music. Maybe some of the most influential cultures on Spain’s music are the Roman and Greek cultures; the supporting influences are the Moors, Jews, and German cultures. A popular music that comes from Spain is Flamenco, which many people thought to be a national music in Spain. On the contrary, Flamenco is only famous just in one part of Spain; an autonomous community in Spain called Andalusia, which is considered the largest in terms of land area in the country. However, a quick reseach on the beginnings of Flamenco will show you that this couldn’t be farther from the truth; Flamenco is actually only popular in one part of Spain which is the Andalusian area.
Probably one of the main reasons why Flamenco was not so known is that it is said to to be acquired by Andalusia by the gypsies which have never really been a famous group to people all over the world. Being a music that began in Andalusia, Flamenco has intricate, very rapid passages, and the dance is defined by loud foot works. Unfortunately, this doesn’t make a difference in the reality that the ancestry of this musical and dance form is all but missing.
Tracing the history and origin of Flamenco, it was situated in a turbulent era wherein a lot of prejudices against Gypsies are everywhere including in Spain. Another study shows that Flamenco is a mix of gypsy dance culture and the descendants of Moorish music during the 8th century until the 17th century; also there are experts that believe that aside from gypsy and Moorish influence, Byzantine church music, and the music of India and Egypt played a significant part in shaping Flamenco. Since it was mostly performed by the lower levels of society, historians and upper class society that period ignored what music and dance the common people are doing, so there are very little records that can be restored. Another significant reason in adding to the difficulty in the study of the origin of Flamenco is that the number of people who danced it were illiterate and did not know how to write so they maintained the music and culture through oral tradition, and to make matters worse they were being persecuted during the Spanish inquisition in 1492.
Much of Flamenco’s origin had vanished because it was only recorded through oral tradition. However, one face is clear which is that Flamenco has shaped dance cultures worldwide.
