Was there a lack of medical professionals during the American Civil War?
Actually, when placed next to any and every other country in the world, the Americans during the American Civil war had more medical professionals and laymen per soldier than anyone else. In fact, even though Britain had adopted a combat nursing unit of sorts a decade earlier during the Crimean War, Britain’s military was opposing nursing personnel near the battlefield Years after they had been proved beneficial in the U.S., and they were, arguably, the next best. Also, the Americans had people ON the front lines, both TREATING and taking people off the battlefield instead of waiting for the battle to be over. Clara Barton (America’s equivalent to Florence Nightingale) had a bullet go through her sleeve and kill the man she was working on!
Even the Confederate States had a good system. In fact, the FIRST Female commissioned Officer in the Western world was a Confederate woman who ran a hospital during the American Civil War.
EDIT: as for the comment about a “lack of Medical knowledge”. Yes, but that was universal and not just in the U.S. during the Civil War. Using that criteria You could say that we had a “lack of medical knowledge” during the Viet Nam War if you guaged it by today’s medical knowledge.
