Devizes In Wiltshire
The historic town of Devizes Wiltshire is an interesting place to visit. With nearly 500 listed buildings, if you are in to history, this is the place for you.
Devizes is associated with the folklore of Wiltshire because it contains the pond where the Moonrakers story is said to have happened. Crammer Pond is where a group of local smugglers are reputed to have stored their brandy, sunk in barrels. The story says that as they were trying to retrieve the liquor with agricultural rakes, an official came over to see what they were up to. One quick thinking man pointed to a reflection of the moon in the water and said that they were trying to rake out the ‘cheese’. The official went away laughing at the stupidity of the men whilst the smugglers retrieved their brandy. Wiltshire people are still called ‘Moonrakers’.
Whats on in Wiltshire in the town of Devizes and where’s worth seeing? Well, continuing the alcoholic theme, the Wadworth brewery in the town is worth a visit. Charmingly, it still uses dray horses that can be spotted about the town delivering beer. The brewery, built in 1885 by Henry Alfred Wadworth, is open to the public. The brewery still employs a Cooper to make barrels and if you are lucky, you may get to see him at work. Wadworth’s make cask ales such as 6X and Bishop’s Tipple. Find them at the northern end of the market Place.
The town has a great little museum – The Wiltshire Heritage Museum – that contains probably the best Bronze Age collection in England, featuring pieces found at Stonehenge and Avebury stone circles.
The Caen Hill flight of 29 locks on the approach to Devizes was built in the late 18th century. Boats can be hired or places booked on canal trips in the summer. The feat of engineering is worth seeing and the views of the surrounding countryside from the tow path are a plus.
You can visit the civil war battlefield of 1643 on Roundway Down. The people of Devizes largely supported the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War. A Royalist army of 2000 soldiers set off for the town and the two armies met at Roundway Down. The Roundhead Cavalry fled but were forced over a steep slope where many men and horses died. This scarp is now known as ‘Bloody Ditch’.
