Tecumseh Sherman
Who were Robert E. Lee,Ulysses S. Grant,Stonewall Jackson and William Tecumseh Sherman?

i need like maybe3 or 4 sentence summary of each person. PLEASE HELP!

Robert E Lee was the general of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War.( All these leaders are from that war.) After turning down the generalship of the Union Army to fight for the South, he led the southern forces to victory after victory until he was forced into retreat after Gettysburg in 1863, but fought on until surrendering at Appomatox, VA in 1865. Much beloved by his troops, they at first called him “Granny Lee” due to his age, but soon admired and respected this great tactition and soldier. Lee was a solemn and reverent man who just wanted the war to end.

Jackson was a general in a Brigade of Lee’s army and, you might say, one of his closest companions during their time together. Jackson, like Lee, was brilliant, but a bit strange. A hypochondriac and teetotaler with strange obessions, he would suck on lemons while marching and hold one hand up in battle to”balance” himself. He read the Bible and qouted it constantly. Jackson got his nickname when at the battle of Bull Run, the first major engagement of the war, as Jackson stood in the face of Union fire, one of his troops exclaimed, “There stands Jackson like a stone wall”. He died tragically, shot by his own troops at night in a case of mistaken identity.

After the Mexican War, Grant tried a little of everything, from clerk to farmer, but failed miserably. He found his calling when he was called upon to lead the Union Army of hte Potomac after a sereis of generals were hired and fired by Lincoln. In response to complaints about Grant’s dirinking, Lincoln said to find out what he drinks and order a barrel of it for all the other generals. Grant led the Union army to victory over the Southern forces, accepting Lee’s surrender. He was known as “unconditional surrender” Grant ( from his own 2 initials: U.S.). Grant lived to become president for a term and died therefter from throat cancer, probably brought on by having been a chain cigar smoker his whole life.

Sherman was in charge of the Union Army that, after conquering Vicksburg, moved south and swept through Atlanta and the Carolinas, eventually accepting the surrender of Johnston, his Confederate counterpart. He did go to West Point with many of his contemporaries, but did not serve in the Mexican War as did Grant, Lee and Jackson. Although a great bulldog of a fighter, many thought him to be mentally unstable, and there is some truth to his having periodic feelings of depression and suicide. He is famous for his scorched earth type of warfare while burning his way across the land on the march through the Southern states during the war, and for saying that “war is all hell.” His troops would also regularly tear up train tracks as they went, heating the ties and bending them around trees, rendering them useless, The southern troops called them “Sherman’s neck ties”. He survived the war and replaced Grant as commander of the Union forces for a time.
