Fancy Dress Ideas – Top Tips
Are you trying to stand out from the crowd by thinking of some fantastic fancy dress ideas? Perhaps you’ve been invited to a fancy dress party and need a costume, or perhaps you’d like to host a fancy dress party and need to think of a top theme? A lot of the best costumes are based on movie, cartoon or fairy tale themes, which means you can be imaginative as you like.
Some very popular themes include Disney movies as there are so many, spanning several decades. Because of this there are absolutely loads of Disney costumes available to buy, for both adults and children.
Some examples of popular Disney films and cartoons include Shrek, Buzz Lightyear, Peter Pan, Pocahontas, Robin Hood, Little Red Riding Hood, 101 Dalmations, and Wizard of Oz, to name just a few. Think of a Disney film, old or new, and choose your favourite character and there will probably be a costume available for it.
Pirate costumes are a massive hit following the success of the three Pirates of the Caribbean movies. You can get pirate costumes for girls and boys in all sorts of different styles, as well as specific character costumes, such as Captain Jack Sparrow. Pirate costumes are quite easy to make yourself as well, all you need are a few accessories, like a sword or a pistol.
Another fabulous costume idea is a Moulin Rouge costume, based on a costume seen in the movie of the same name, which featured Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. You can make Moulin Rouge costumes cheeky and fun, and you can get some fabulous ready-to-wear costumes. Think of feathers, fishnet stockings, and showgirls and you can imagine a Moulin rouge costume.
Other film based fancy dress themes include the classic movie The Wizard of Oz, as there is a whole cast of well-known characters on which to base a costume. The most obvious Wizard of Oz costume is of course Dorothy, but you can also get costumes for the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow, as well as the Wicked Witch of the West, Glinda the Good Witch, and the wizard himself. This is a fabulous theme as all the characters are so identifiable.
One other popular film-based theme is Star Wars. You can get Star Wars costumes for pretty much every character from every movie, which means there is lots of choice to create a varied and fun costume party. From classic Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia costumes to more recent movie characters such as the brilliant Darth Maul. Another very popular Star Wars fancy dress costume for girls is the white Padme Amidala outfit.
Another great theme is Super heroes as there are lots of them in movies based on comic books. This is a great theme for children and adults alike as again there are plenty of super hero costumes and everyone has their favourite. Some examples are Spiderman, Batman, Mr Incredible, Iron Man, The Thing, and Wonder Woman.
The number of fancy dress ideas stemming from movies, cartoons or story books is so large that there are hundreds of costumes, so a good place to start is to think of your favourite character and base your fancy dress costume on that. If you choose a costume you like you’ll love wearing it and have lots of fun.
