Could the North have won without Shermans March to the Sea?
I don’t think it would have been possible. Th entire point of Sherman’s March was to come up and trap Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia…in this way, Grant would be just north of Lee, and Sherman would be South of Lee. Lee would have had no way to get out…which is exactly what happened. The way the South was playing out the War is exactly how Vietnam and Iran/Iraq have and are doing to the U.S….either country had nothing to lose, and all they had to do to get what they wanted was to wait out the US…that’s what the SOuth was doing throughout the Civil War…Lee knew that if both armies had an equal amount of soldiers then the South would have easily won, and Lee was even afraid of an all out battle with the North…but because of Sherman’s March, Lee was forced to fight because there was literally no way to escape unharmed. And after the next major battle, Lee had to surrender his army to Grant’s, and thw war was virtually over.
The key point is that the South was waging a defensive was, meaning they would only fight if the North came onto their field. Which is what happened throughout the war. In order for the South to maintain the Independence, they didn’t have to destroy the North, but in order for the North to reclaim the South, they had to destroy the South.
