Who was a better general? Stonewall Jackson or Philip Sheridan?
Historian tend to romanticize Stonewall and like many storied characters he helped his legend by dying before anyone could find fault with him but the truth is that Phillip Sheridan was a terrfic staff officer who backed up bravery in battle with thorough preparation and attention to detail. Stonewall hated paperwork and ignored ‘petty details’ whch is one of the reasons he was shot by a patrol that had not been informed that their general was out & about scouting. Sheridan was a much better planner, ruthless in carrying out what he perceived to be huis duty.
