Workers Comp Should Be Paid To American Indian Miners

Unfortunately, many of the American Indian miners themselves because casualties of the same Cold War. Cancer and other ailments that can be blamed on radiation exposure have killed, or are killing many of the miners today. There have been many families who have lost people, and many who are still alive face a desperate struggle against sickness.
Heavily scarred arms from dialysis treatments is common among the survivors of the radiation. The majority of workers blamed the drinking water that was in the mines, and traces of radioactive minerals in it have been proven scientifically.
In 1990, Congress passed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act. This act was constructed to aid these uranium miners, as well as other miners who suffer similar issues, whose health had been compromised by their work as miners. The reason these miners are being compensated by taxpayers is that the work they did was solely to assist the American military’s nuclear weapons division. Under the provisions of the law, every underground uranium miner is entitled to $100,000. They must meet the condition that they suffer from a specific variety of lung ailments that have been associated with exposure to radiation. However, hundreds of Indian miners eligible for this payment, to this day have still not seen a penny.
The act, as it was written, forces these miners to face conditions that are almost impossible to meet. The first barrier they face is satisfying the application requirements, which must be done in English. The problem for these Indian miners is the fact many of them do not understand English that well.
While 242 miners have used services at the Office of Navajo Uranium Workers to complete the paperwork, only 96 of those have been approved for their compensation. A total of 1,314 claims from uranium workers have been approved by the Justice Department. But there have been an additional 1,316 applications denied.
The required records to prove that one actually worked in a uranium mine include paycheck stubs, as well as other forms of documentation. After decades of work in the mines, many applicants don’t have documentation going back so far. Obtaining copies of these records through existing authorities is difficult or impossible.
The United States government first opened up the uranium minds on the Navajo Indian Reservation back in 1947. The jobs brought by the opening of the mines were a welcome event, at the time. This appreciation for work came in spite of the low wages and lousy working conditions.
Radon poses one of the biggest dangers in the mines. Radon is a product of decaying uranium and is difficult to detect because it is colorless and odorless. Exposure to radon is believed to be a cause of most of the lung ailments that make miners eligible for government compensation.
This fall, former miners and tribal officials will lobby Congress to get changes made in the law so that former miners can more easily qualify for payments. The government’s biggest concern is that many miners feel that they deserve compensation simply because they worked in the mines, rather than due to the illness and disease they acquired as a result of that work.
