Public Relations – Learn More About It
The public does not look at Public Relations as an honest business. This is mainly due to the fact that public relations personnel are hired to deal with crisis communications, if the organisation has done something wrong that harms the public. However, a good public relations company can increase a company’s profits, build trust with the organisation’s publics and publicise the services or products that the business is selling.
For many people, public relations is synonymous with advertising. However, public relations does not involve paying the media for publicity. Public relations relies on gaining endorsements from third party organisations. Whereas advertising involves paying for exposure in newspapers and on the TV, public relations get free coverage through issuing press releases and going on the actual television shows. There are several sectors besides media relations where public relations is used.
Possibly the most important sector of public relations is investor relations. Managing relations between the company and the people that have a financial involvement with it is vital for the company’s image and future investment. Making sure that shareholder and investor’s questions are answered, answering enquiries from organisations interested in the financial stability of the company and keeping an eye on legal matters that affect the shareholders are all part of investor relations.
Maintaining a good relationship between company directors and the general staff is also important and falls under the sector of labour relations. The labour relations team will work with trade unions and other official labour representatives to prevent strikes, working disputes and to prevent bad publicity from these type of actions.
Building trust between the company and its various publics is also achieved through acts of good will and philanthropy. Fun events, bonuses and awards are good for workers and shareholders whilst charitable work in the community surrounding the company builds trust with potential customers.
