Is it a sin to marry your own parent?
I hve just read Act Two of “Inherit the Wind”, for the first time, and in it, Mr. Matthew Harrison Brady seems to be married to his mother (Correct me if I am wrong). I just want to know if in the bible it is considered a sin to marry your own parent. I will accept personal opinions as well.
(P.S. If Mrs. Brady isn’t really Mr. Brady’s mother, but only his wife, feel free to let me know.)
Yes, it is. Leviticus 18:7 The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she [is] thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
18:8 The nakedness of thy father’s wife shalt thou not uncover: it [is] thy father’s nakedness.
M. H. Brady was not married to his mother, by the way. He is married to his own wife and they have a daughter. It was not uncommon in those days for an older married couple with children to call each other “mother” and “father”.
