Taking a Closer Glance at Your Child’s Anxiety and Phobia
Everybody is capable of feeling anxious at times, no matter what gender and age, and no matter what social status; we all just become restless about different things in life. Children too are not exempted from feeling anxious about one thing or another. Some authorities on humanistic therapy explains that this is healthy for children, provided that the anxiety is channeled into positive action and is kept at a manageable level with the help of parents. A certain amount of fear can be believed beneficial because it tells you that there are limits to what you can do; much like the natural instinct for self-preservation. A common kind of fear developed among toddlers is the fear and anxiety brought about by separation with parents, hence the temper tantrums when being left at school with other children. While it’s normal for children to move through life and defeat distinct sets of fear as they grow up, what is not normal and is not healthy at all is if children fixate on this fear to the point that they are already unable to function as normal individuals.
When a child’s fear is strengthened and continues unchecked, it has the possibility of progressing into real phobia which can be carried on to adulthood. Phobia is the extreme, intense, and irrational fear about something real or made up. Because of the temperament of phobia itself, it might be difficult for parents to handle this alone. Per se, phobias are the top reasons why parents often consult therapists and bring their children to therapy; some fears aren’t real phobias, though, and therapists can help you clarify which is which.
If you are considering getting professional help, you may also want to explore play therapy as an option. Children will often act out their phobias when they are consented to play; for example, if a child has a phobia of spiders, he or she will perhaps fabricate an imaginary spider while playing. Children will also be more comfortable with facing their fears if they are facing them in a familiar and non-hostile environment.
It’s true that facing one’s fears may become an elongated travel, but it’s better to face this trip with your child rather than have your child go through it alone, or never go through it at all. It’s important to make sure that your child’s environment at home is advantageous to his or her development in the sense that family members understand what needs to be done to help your child instead of maddening the situation. Trivializing your child’s feelings will get done nothing more than give your child the feeling that you don’t take into account what they think or feel, and that you will not accept them if they are fearful of something.
If your child is ever going to attain the guts to face his or her phobias and to find a way to deal with it, your help as a parent is going to be very important. In such cases, your care and support as parents would be deeply desired.
