Civil War- Kepis and how do telegraphs work?
Kepis- ik ther hats that the soldiers wore but is ther a website tht has like history and/or just info about it?? i haf to write a paragraph about it, and is ther a website that explains how telegraphs worked during the civil war and/or how it was important during the war?

A kepi is a hat worn by soldiers during the Civil War. It was adopted from the French infantry hat of the same name and, though altered slightly, still bore a great resemblance to the original.
Officially, it was called a “forage cap” and was most frequently worn in manners that appeared less-than-military in nature. It was often shapeless and rarely protected a soliders head from anything, including the rain and sun. Despite this, it was still the most common cap worn by troops of both sides of the Civil War. It continued to see use well into the Indian Wars but was later replaced by a more functional cap.
A telegraph is a machine for transmitting and receiving messages over long distances. The original electrical telegraph was developed and patented in 1837 by Samuel Morse who devised series of dots and dashes to simulate the English alphabet. The first message sent over the telegraph was “A patient waiter is no loser” over a distance of three miles on January 6, 1938.
The way the original telegraph worked was an operator using a “Morse key” would make and break an electrical contact with a telegraph key which resulted in an audible signal at the other end produced by a telegraph sounder which would be interpreted and transcribed by a human.
The significance of this was that, no longer would a mounted messenger be needed to deliver all messages that needed to travel from one place to the next. This means that any message from a commander to the front lines could be transmitted from the safety of a nearby hilltop to a foreward position where it could be interpreted and relayed to the troops. In addition, it allowed for commanders to redirect troops across a broader spectrum from a single location. Communication was much easier and commanders could learn of victories, defeats and make adjustments much more easily.
