Infantry Genealogy
I do genealogy as a hobby, and I have a question about military companies. Please read on for more details.?

I have noticed in wars of previous eras (Spanish American War and Civil War, in particular) that men apparently served in a unit of people from their own part of the U.S. For instance, I’m looking at a cousin from Grayson County, Texas, who served in the Spanish American War in the 2nd Texas Infantry. Most other people for whom I have military records also serve in a group that was apparently formed of people from the same area. Is this still done today?

No. The regimental system has gone through many changes. Some of the old units still exist, their lineages, but they are not exclusively geographical now. I was in the 23rd Infantry Regiment (Army), whose lineage goes back to the Indian Wars.

Many of the old regiments were state militias. When the new reserve system was started, those regiment were disbanded. Some were folded into the national guard.
