what significant things did general james longstreet do.?
Longstreet was one of the first proponents of an early form of trench warfare. He was also one of the first credible opponents of Napoleonic Warfare. He advocated defensive warfare on the part of the South during the Civil War, but was shot down by Lee who felt this was not a successful long-term plan. He cited Napoleon, whose guiding philosophy was always “The only logical end to a defensive war is defeat.” Longstreet wrote down some of the theories that became the Theory of Modern Warfare, basis of the tactics used on a large scale in WWI. These tactics, ironically, were slowly invalidated at the advent of the blitzkrieg and the rise of guerrilla warfare, but still remain a principle text at most military universities due to their overarching applicability in spite of their literal obsolescence.
EDIT: As for actually doing things physically in the war, honestly he didn’t make much progress. He is principally remembered for walking away from several losing battles in protest of Lee, notably Gettysburg.
