Many historians believe that Alexander was an outstanding general. What do you think was his most outstanding campaign and why?
You ask what was he greatest achievment well the Battle of Guagamela was the breaking point of the Achaemenid Persian Empire , however it was not his greatest struggle or battle against them. The instance i give you is where Alexander true potential for winning over and exploiting the weaknesses of his enemy and that would be at The Seige of Tyre ” NO DOUBT”. It happened early on in the campiagn. Alexander crosses the Hellespont into Anatolia (Turkey) and travels South down the Ionian Coast , and continues down through the Levant and this is when he attacks Tyre as it and the entire Levant was an important Naval spot for the Persians. And Alexander did not want any suprises. From Tyre he went into Egypt where he went to the Siwa Oaisis. At this point he had seen Troy , had he first battle against Persians at the Granicus River , sacked Tyre , Byblos & Sidon ( these were the big 3 Persian Ports
Tyre was an isand city which corrasponded to a main city on land. Alexander had taken the city by land , but its true power lied on the island. Initialy he sent envoys to the King on the island but to no avail as they were executed in veiw Alexander and his forces from atop its walls which could be seen from land. Im hazy on the logistics but it sat roughly a mile of land with walls 50 + feet high that actually continued under water.
The idea was to build a land bridge using rocks loggs and anything else that could be used to fill in the harbor. In doing this Alexander
would launch 2 campaigns against the island fort in a period of 7 months. The 1st attempt was a failure , as the seige towers were burned while crossing the bridge that was made. With the 1st attempt they had filled 2/3 the way across the harbor. The 2nd was a victory. Alexander is known for his compassion , but after what had been done to the envoys none would given. The entire citadel was leveled.
Read it for yourself wikipedia.com / Seige of Tyre
through archeological diggs and research , it is believed that the exact spot (section of wall) that Alexander busted through has been found.
Important to note is that an entire city now sits on the causeway that Alexander built over 2,300 years ago. He laid the foundation that would settle and collect ocean silt making it the solid foundation it is today.
I know its a cliche to love Alexander , but i truly believe that he was THE GREAT , Hannibal himself said so , but thats another story.
I would also like to say that he could have crossed The Himalayas into Western China , if his Army had not turned back. Alexanders army was the most battle hardened in history there has never been an army like it. They were undefeated in battle in a time when you got up close and personel with your enemy unlike the the Arrow Throwing Eurasian Nomads that the Future would bring to the region.
