Can anyone recommend good biographies on Gen. Robt E Lee, U S Grant, Wm T Sherman, Patton, and/or MacArthur?
I’m looking for thorough, warts and all, cradle to grave type bios of the above generals and Montgomery + Marshall of WWII fame for personal reading. I enjoy the writing styles of Stephen Ambrose and David McCullough. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
Check out _Sherman: Soldier, Realist, American_, by Basil Henry Liddell Hart.
Patton: A Biography, by Alan Axelrod, is part of the “Great Generals” series. They also bring you _MacArthur_ by Richard B. Frank.
The best-known book about Monty (Field Marshal Montgomery) is his own Memoirs.
I can’t recommend any particular Lee or Grant biographies, but a Civil War book that I thoroughly enjoyed is The Approaching Fury: Voices of the Storm, 1820-1861_by Stephen B. Oates.
He’s not on your list, but you may want to try the biography of J.E.B. Stuart called _Bold Dragoon._
I just finished reading _Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer_ by James L. Swanson. Way entertaining.
