if I post an item Wednesday evening on Royal Mail special delivery will it arrive Thursday or Friday?

If it’s special delivery then it means next day. You can choose next day 9am or next day 1pm (1pm is far cheaper)So your item will get there on Thursday.
Unless you mean recorded delivery? This is different to special delivery. Item is sent out first class OR second class and will not be delivered next day. Will be delivered as usual times with other post (so anything from 2 days to a week) The only difference is that a recorded delivery is tracked and signed for upon delivery.
Make sure you know the difference between the two.
