Lincoln was saying that a war was needed to keep the south in the Union.If a war was not won then the U.S. would have been broken in two and left a much weaker country.
1. When they lost Gettysburg, they showed that the war was going against the south. When Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation, it made any country fighting on the side of the south a very bad move.
2. They took two Southern diplomats off a British mail ship. The way Lincoln handled this affair was not to go to war with Great Britain.
3. It gave great power to the central government and that was what they were fighting against.
4. Northerners were discontent with new laws passed by Congress to draft men to fight in the American Civil War. They felt that to many people were dying and the government didn’t have the right to draft them.
