Confederate Revolver
Do i need any licenses for a 1851 Confederate 44. revolver?

i am 12 and want to see if my dad can buy a confederate gun without any permits or licenses.

According to the Yankee Government, a Model 1851 Navy Colt is not a firearm. In fact, according to the Yankee Government, no gun using loose powder and ball with either flintlock or percussion ignition is a firearm.

I’d love to hear the BATFE explain to the thousands of dead men killed with M-1861 Springfields or M-1851 navy Colts that they were not killed with firearms.

The thing is some states treat blackpowder firearms the same as any other firearm. other states have no restriction at all on the sale of blackpowder guns. You or your Dad will need to check on the regulations in your home state.

Let me give you some advice on your choice of a blackpowder pistol. Don’t get that .44-caliber Navy.

Buy either a .36 Navy or a .44-caliber M-1860 Army revolver.

Colt never made that revolver in anything other than .36 caliber. The entire revolver is sized around the .36-caliber ball.

Take a good look at a .44 Navy. You will notice two things right away. First the cylinder is rebated. The front in is larger than the rear to aaccommodatethe .44-caliber chambers, and the rear is smaller to fit a .36-ccaliberrecoil shield. Next you will notice that there is a step cut out in the frame to accommodate that larger cylinder. That cutout weakens the frame.

Any brass framed Colt-style revolver is going to have frame stretching issues if shot with heavy loads. With that step cut into the frame and the heavier loads, your .44-caliber Navy is going to stretch faster than a .36-caliber.

You should spend a little more money and buy a steel framed revolver in either .36-caliber or .44-caliber, buy a brass .36-caliber M-1851, or a brass .44-caliber M-1860 Army Model.

I’ve owned and shot a brass M-1851 .36 navy Model for nearly 30 years. Most of the shooting has been with light target loads, and the gun is still perfectly in time. So you really don’t have to shoot your gun to pieces to have fun with it.

Good Luck and Good Shooting.
