Eureka Springs, Arkansas – The City that Water Built
Men were first lured by the crystal clear waters of the spring to the hills of the Arkansas Ozarks. The Osage Indians are believed to have been the first people to use the spring for its healing powers. They spread the legend of the curative properties of the spring. The first white man to discover the spring was Dr. Jackson. Alvah Jackson reportedly found the spring in 1854. This became the greatest town boom in the history of Arkansas.
The Dr’s son had an inflammation of the eyes from a hunting accident. Dr. Jackson went to what is now Basin Spring and got water for his son to wash his eyes. His condition quickly improve. Dr. Jackson believed in the curative powers of the spring water. Dr. Jackson bottled the spring water and sold it as “Dr. Jacksons Eye Water. Soon word of mouth spread thru Arkansas and the surrounding states.
Jackson would treat sick solders from both the Confederate and Federal army during the Civil War. Dr. Jackson was a southern sympathizer and nursed confederate soldiers in 1865. Since Northwest Arkansas was then controlled by Federal troops; it was necessary for these confederate troops to hide out in the mountains. The confederate soldiers camped out in the hills above the spring. Soon the Confederate soldiers had recovered.
It was May of 1879 before the medicinal benefits of the spring water would be again reported. Then Dr. Jackson introduced Judge Saunders of the County Court to the spring water. Judge Saunders was afflicted by erysipelas. Judge Saunders lost 33 pounds and reported to be completely rejuvenated in just 5 weeks. The Judge also reported his hair turned from white back to black.
No one knows whether the spring waters had any actual therapeutic properties at that time. Subsequent analysis done on the waters have shown no chemical difference between these waters and those in other parts of Northwest Arkansas. Regardless, a legend was born.
In 1879, about 50 people lived and camped around the spring. Dr. Jackson said the area needed a name. Discussions followed as to naming the town. Two popular names were Jackson Springs and Saunders Springs for the two most famous men in the area at that time. Then someone suggest Eureka meaning I have found it. Neither man wanted the town named after them; so they agreed up this name. Eureka Springs as founded. The City of Eureka Springs was founded on July 4, 1879.
Thousands of visitors flocked to the encampment of tents and shanties swelling the population to over 10,000 when they heard of the water’s healing powers. In less than 1 year, the healing waters would bring 25,000 people to this spot. Eureka Springs’s econony developed around the springs. Thus Eureka was called “The City That Water Built”. The springs brought in people with health problems and hotels, saloons, dry goods stores and grocery stores soon followed. Hill people soon arrived from hundreds of miles away with loads of eggs, ducks and geese to sell. Then the Railroad came.
In 1881, the growning tourists population could stay in 13 hotels. Local newspapers in 1882 reported that the Eureka Springs, Arkansas water was deliciously pure and sweet. Eureka Springs offers a large variety of spa benefits today to tourists.
Eureka Springs has been a popular tourist destination ever since. From historic hotels, romantic cabins and private suites; Eureka Springs has more one-of-a-kind Bed & Breakfast’s per capita of any town in the south. Eureka has relaxing and welcoming lodging for every traveler.
