How did literature and writing style change from before the Civil War to during and after?
I have a project I’m doing and I need something to jump start my brain.
I think a more realistic, much more serious style entered into American writing. Stephen Crane’s Red Badge of Courage probably would have been alot different if he’d written it before the Civil War. Mark Twain was humorous, but had a dark side to his writing, probably as a result of what he saw during the war. Check out Ambrose Bierce’s writings and you’ll see why he was called the “Bitter Bierce”. Less of the noble heroics by writers who were much more cynical as a result of “seeing the elephant”.
The Civil War was the first American war where photography was widely used (it had been used a little in the Mexican War of 1848) so people suddenly were confronted by an uglier reality than what they were use to seeing.
