Why did many in the Union refer to the Civil War as a “poor man’s fight?”?

It was a rich man’s war, but a poor man’s fight. Just like Viet Nam or Iraq. The businessmen (southern slaveholders, anti-Communist imperialists, Texas oilmen) started the war, and the poor boys fight it.
