I am a Bosnian Born Muslim, I lived in the US for 4 years now and am a citizen.?
I plan on joining the USMC (BEST MILITARY FORCE THERE IS I THINK). Do they look at Bosnians or Muslims differently when they join? And how do I get my mom to let me join because I am 17 and we came out of a war torn country, and she isn’t in support because I lost my father in the Bosnian Civil war…
It’s going to be very hard to get your Mom’s support, considering the history of your family. You can try to tell her you feel you owe something to your new country of citizenship.
I was in the Army, and knew a few Muslims. Your religion really isn’t a bid deal in the military. It’s not emphasized. You will find ignorant people who think you are disloyal, Christians who want you to convert for the good of your soul, but for the most part, people won’t pay attention to it all.
Your religious background will be helpful if you are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. People there may be more open to you because you are of the same faith. And you may be able explain some of the religious practices which are common to Islam all over the world (though I am aware that many of the practices would be different in Europe than in Afghanistan, a thousand miles away.)
Thank you for considering serving this country! It always makes me proud that a new immigrant will serve in the military, especially since so many natural born citizens think it is beneath them, or impossibly hard, or something stupid like that. Thank you!
