Thin Neckties Are Here Again
All good things are worth repeating. That is the case with men’s skinny neckties. They first became fashionable at the beggining of the 20th century, only to gain real popularity in the 50′s and return in the 1980s. Today they are returning to style again with the likes of Will Smith, Jeremy Piven and other actors opting for narrow black neckties to go with their tuxedos at the recent Golden Globes Awards.
Thin Neckties during the 1920′s
It is usually recognized that narrow mens ties vary in size from 1 to 3 inches across the widest section of the necktie. Both traditional ties and flat bottom thin ties during the beginning of the 20th century were slender, ranging from 2 to 2 inches wide. Some ties measuring as thin as 1 inches, were even referred to generally at the time as string ties. Due to shortages brought about by World War I, neckties stayed the same for the next decade. Thin neckties around 2 inches were worn into the late 20s, but wouldnt reappear again until the 1950s.
In the meantime, as stated by Sarah Gibbings, in her exceptional book “The Tie: Trends and Traditions”, the shortages of World War II left no funds, no available supplies or factories in Europe. The United States became an exporter of change and upbeat postwar plans for a devastated Europe. Former soldiers sought colorful and bold patterns, something positive and upbeat. The US responded with a toward the broader, florid and brightly colored ties which continued to set the style for the 40′s and early 1950′s. To show off these neckties, the suit jacket lapels became broader and jackets were buttoned lower which provided more space for the necktie.
Skinny Ties of the 50′s
By the mid 50s, the American reaction to the the Korean War, Cold War and a recession dampned the American attitude. The more somber attitude was reflected in mens style. Suits became more unadventerous, with slimmer trousers, smaller lapels and narrower neckties to match. Vibrant and brilliant color combinations were substituted by subdued patterns and solid colors. This brought about the certified rebirth of the quintessential thin black necktie.
As popular celebrities such as Elvis began to wear skinny ties, the teenagers copied their fashion. By the middle of the 1960′s ties as thin as 1 inch were worn by conservative men and college students alike.
Narrow Ties of the 1980′s
Thin ties made another appearance in the 80′s, especially in the new wave music world, which was a rejection of the florid and excessive style of the 70s.
Thin Ties Are Popular Today
Thin ties are popular today. Just the other day attorney Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) made an appearance on the Colbert Report sporting a dark narrow necktie. During the episode, Stephen Colbert challenged him to show something wrong with him. After a quick glance at Colberts broad yellow foulard style tie, Romero promptly pointed out, That tie is not my favorite, which predictably brought lots of of laughs at the hosts expense.
While there is definately space for all types of neckties to reflect ones own taste and comfort level, there will always be something classy about the sleek and tailored vision of a well dressed man wearing a extraordinary narrow necktie.
