Medical Careers Have Developed As Time Progresses
Over the course of time, many changes have occurred in the medical field, including shorter office hours, and more complicated diagnoses. When you compare today’s physician with his historical counterpart, the country doctor of days gone by, his profession may have changed due to technological advances, but it still remains demanding. In a recent documentary about an urban city, a doctor talks about what it was like for the doctors in earlier times in that same area. The very first while man to live in this city, strangely enough, was a physician. As part of an expedition to explore the area and community, this particular doctor was merely passing through the region. Clearly, he discovered that there were few customers to be found in the area and subsequently went back where he came from as it had more potential to sustain a medical practice.
Because the population was so sparsely settled in this community, the doctors who were there had a difficult time eking out a living. With the onset of the Civil War, they gathered their medical equipment together and moved out. Doctors in the 1800′s were hailed as heroes in that community. Back then, it took a lot of determination in order for a young man to become a doctor. Doctors worked whenever their services were required and often received no pay for their labor. More often than not, there were more sick people who couldn’t pay for services rendered than there were those who could.
Rarely a night went by when the doctor wasn’t called out to see a patient in the early hours of the morning. The still of the night would be broken for physician as well as his neighbors, by frantic friends and relatives seeking help for their loved one. Then, once he hitched up a horse or two to the buggy, the sleepy doctor would set out on a chilly trek outside of the area. This site teaches you about medical job.
Those doctors were not always paid in silver coin for their treatments. Renumeration might well come from the family’s farm produce, or from the patient’s manual labor for the doctor. In order to supplement their meager salary, some hardworking doctors sold homemade medicines in addition to their practice. This was particularly true of the pioneer doctor.
There was no Food and Drug Administration to regulate these medicines, and one highly educated doctor sold home brews that were of questionable efficacy. A headache and neuralgia medicine which he manufactured obtained some success. Told his symptoms would be gone within only five to twenty minutes, the patient paid 10 cents for the three course treatment.
Other physicians earned some extra cash through starting their own drug stores. A certain physician became the proprietor of the first drugstore in this area, and he opened it on the main avenue through town. Three more physicians quickly followed suit. With additional hospitals built shortly after, the first hospital coming into the locale enabled physicians to work under more reasonable conditions. It wasn’t long after that codes of conduct and mottos were established, indicating quite clearly that the medical profession was adding a lot to the hospital’s proficiency and confidence based on having better facilities and experience.
