The Youth In The 1960s Discovered Their Voice Through Rock Music
An individual listening to a Hendrix vinyl, Janis Joplin song-set, or Dylan record is likely to be undergoing an experience that transcends the sound. The music brings to mind images and ideas of mankind’s struggle against oppression and embrace of liberties.
Few eras in United States history were quite like the 1960’s. With the Cold War raging and the Civil Rights Movement gaining ground, this was a seminal time. People became displeased with what they perceived as the country’s appetite for power and control. They believed the country should be like a beacon of hope for the rest of the world, and set an example of tolerance and justice.
Created from these feelings was a new direction in rock and roll music. Up to this point, the genre had certainly signified rebellion and dislike of authority, but in a generally apolitical way. Rebellion with concrete goals, though, was what rock musicians of that time began to push for. The disenfranchised and those who felt that they had been ignored in the creation of public policy found that these musicians had similar sentiments.
Commencing with Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and other artists of the folk revival, as well as certain soul artists such as Sam Cooke, sociopolitical subject matter became much more prevalent in popular music, and the rock movement soon moved to incorporate it. Among those to imbue their songs with more weighty subject matter and be plain-spoken critics of the way things were were the aforementioned Joplin and Hendrix, The Beatles, MC5, The Velvet Underground, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The Doors. A wide spectrum of topics including civil rights, anti-war efforts, feminism, gay rights, the environment, and drug use and possible legalization were discussed by them. The punk and metal subgenres and bands that purvey other styles are an evolution of the counterculture-rock association that was cemented by the end of the ‘60’s.
When playing a vinyl record from an artist or group from the 1960’s, one cannot help but be taken back in history to this critical era. It could seem as if they are suddenly engulfed by protests and other products of the turbulent atmosphere of the time. Although that decade is long past, those who were part of it and fought for the intrinsic rights of mankind, including many musicians, are immortal and will never, ever be forgotten.
