I’ll let someone else answer about Ship Money, but the English Civil War I can help with. The most direct short term cause of the war was Charles I sending his soldiers to the House of Commons to arrest five MPs he accused of treason. Long term, the main cause centered around the conflicting view of rule of the king and Parliament. Charles I believed in an ideological concept of divine right, enforcing a belief of earlier times that the king is God’s representative on earth. He refused to allow Parliament to sit for eleven years, making himself essentially a dictator. However, rebellions in Scotland and the need to keep England active in the new world meant that he found himself short on national funds, forcing him to allow the Commons to sit so he could ask for funds. With more powers given, the Parliament became more demanding of internal reform.
