Understanding Community Psychology?
In a civil society participation of community in different aspects of life is highly symbolic and crucial. A community being involved in a social cause or a movement generates awareness amongst the citizen as well draws attention of the government and policy makers.
This is also true in the case of mental illness. There are many distorted facts pertaining to mental illness and health in our society. This often stems from paucity of information or misinformation, insensitivity and inhibition. Now, the big question is how to bring about a change??, the only relevant answer to this question seems to be greater community participation, which will enable understanding and help in the process of treatment of those suffering from mental disorders.
Many studies have been done over the years to conclude that the cause of mental illness is due to social, economic and physical environment that a person is exposed to. Dysfunctional family environment, no education, poor living condition are some of the issues. The main focus of community psychology is to promote mental awareness and helping those with a problem as well dispensing all discrimination against those who suffer from it. It is a relatively new branch of psychology, the importance of which was acknowledged after the Second World War era.
Another advantage of making people aware is to discredit all stigma and discrimination that exists in our society with regard to mental health. Encouraging such people and embracing them without any discrimination also helps in the treatment and rehabilitation of those suffering from psychological problems.
Lack of resources and infrastructure are the main reason why most mental illness is being undiagnosed and not treated. By using the resources of the community this deficit may be met. The community can be involved in the organization of health seminar, mental health camps and sponsoring of treatment. Each community has a hall which is used for the community and varied other activities. Perhaps a mental health clinic supported by the community may be established with the help of professionals such as psychologist, doctors, psychiatrist, social worker etc.
The office of a health clinic must be well equipped and nicely planned out. There should ne enough sitting arrangement and a private section where the client or patient may be able to interact with the team of professionals. The clinic must be nice and well ventilated.
