Help with History Research?

One of my college professors has asked me to help her this summer with research on Civil War Quilts. I have been looking on the campus library’s website and I plan on spending the majority of the day in the library sometime this week, but I’m still having trouble finding sources. So far, she’s asked me to research textile mills in America at the time of the Civil War. She also wants to know where they got their cotton during the war, and how the South got their fabric made during the war. She also wants me to check on the development of the first synthetic dyes which took place around this time.
Like I said, I have been researching this, but I need some help. SO if anyone knows anything about this subject or knows where I can look for reputable sources, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks :)

Tink411,
great question and there is more information available than you may realize. The third link below is to the Library of Congress – at the top of the page is a button entitled “Ask a Librarian” and I suggest you use this as an opportunity to extend your research by asking away questions you deem appropriate. Lastly go to the Civil War.org website (link #4) and give the search engine a try there as well (I just did and there are some very interesting articles on this matter).

I would also recommend you contact the Smithsonian Institute on American History in Washington DC and the National Archives – they both will have information in regards to your research requirements.

Best of luck and this sounds like History fun,
Gerry
