Who do you think was the best overall General officer of the Civil War?
First, North, then, South, then overall. For the North, we have U.S.Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, Phil Sheridan, and several others.
For the South, Robert E. Lee, of course. Stonewall Jackcson, James Longstreet, Sydney Albert Johnston. Was Nathan Bedford Forrest a General? I don’t think so, or was he?
Overall, I have to go with Grant, although Lee was clearly the better strategist, but Grant knew what it took to whip him. Granted, (no pun intended), Grant had superior forces, and he used them, as McClellan would not.
But who do you think was the best, and who was you favorite?
I don’t know who was best, I don’t know if anyone knows, but my favorite is Sherman, the father of modern warfare, or so many believe.
What is your opinion?
I am not glorifying war, or anything like that, it is strictly a historical question.
Ooh, how about Jeb Stuart?
By far and away is was Thomas J.Jackson.
On the Northern side it was Ulysses S. Grant.
