Harm From Smithsonian Institution Fire Is Small
The Smithsonian Institution of Natural History had a little fire on Monday, February 7. The fire was very quickly put out by Washington D.C. firefighters. The fire at the Smithsonian Institution could possibly be the fault of deferred upkeep. As of 2009, deferred upkeep added up to over $ 2 billion. They are lucky the damage wasn’t severe because this could have possibly cost a lot more than a personal loan for the city if loss was worse. A small fire at the Smithsonian to put out
The Washington D.C. fire department reported today that firefighters were called to the National Museum of Natural History. There was a spark that flew off of air conditioning equipment. This led to insulation catching fire. There was not very much damage to the Natural History museum as firefighters got the fire out easily. Traffic in and around the Natural History Museum was disrupted during the fire, as a plume of black smoke was visible in and around D.C.
The Smithsonian Institution maintenance
The United States government pays for the majority of the Smithsonian Institution. The 2010 Deficit Commission has recommended charging admission fees to get to the Smithsonian to help defray costs. There aren’t any admission fees yet. It might not take place at all. There are billions invested to the Smithsonian Institution upkeep instead. It isn’t getting done though. The maintenance that hasn’t been done may be the reason why the air conditioning vent sparked a fire into the Smithsonian Institution.
Previous fire at Smithsonian Institution
The Smithsonian Institution has had fires before the little fire. There have been several little fires over the years at the various museums. There was a fire in the Smithsonian Institute on January 24th, 1865. This damaged the first story of the building, the philosophical laboratory, the lecture room and a picture gallery. There weren’t any injuries while the institute was closed in both fires, the one in 1865 and 2011.
