The Cold War: The Strangest War In Documented History
When we look back over the span of generations that is representative of American historical past, it is possible to call out significant military events which symbolize the most important wars of the nation. From The Second World War to the Civil War to Korea to World War I, America was involved with numerous military engagements and emerged triumphant in all but a few of them. But the single oddest, longest lasting wars that America has entered into was the one that was referred to as “The Cold War”.
The Cold War held up for decades. It was called the Cold War because this unique war did not have any battleground nor deployment of troops. It simply consisted of inhospitable silence involving the United States Of America and the Soviet Union from the mid-1940s, right after World War II, and prolonged to the early portion of the 1990s.
The U . S and the Soviet Union were both Allied countries during the Second World War, which means they were joined in fighting common opponents, specifically the Axis nations. Unusually, the hostilities between the two nations began with the United States’ invention of the atom bomb near the conclusion of World War II. Shortly after, the Soviet Union developed its own nuclear weaponry. The immensity of the destructive power of nuclear weapons gave virtually any land that had them so called ‘superpowers.’ An increased sense of mistrust came to exist between the two countries of the other’s possible misuse of their military capabilities. They aimed their nuclear weapons at each other as a muted threat of retaliation if ever one nation made a decision to attack the opposite.
This staring contest involving the two superpowers survived for nearly half a century. Each nation warily monitored the other. They produced a lot more nuclear weaponry every time they believed that the other nation was gaining an advantage over them in terms of nuclear warfare abilities. The wish to maintain parity with regards to the other nation’s nuclear strength extended to illogical levels, particularly as each individual country’s stash of atomic weapons was sufficient to explode the whole earth many times over.
The United States as well as the Soviet Union knew that an atomic war between them should be prevented at any cost, as participating in such a war would certainly lead to the complete destruction of life on earth. Still, nobody was prepared to yield a single inch to the other. No one was ready to initiate peace-making by ceasing their nuclear arms manufacturing. So, the Cold War dragged on non-stop for ages. As a direct conflict between them would endanger the earth, both countries resorted to supporting opposing nations in smaller-scale wars around the world.
Through the Vietnam War, the Soviet Union allied with China to beat the U . S .. The United States, in turn, reinforced the Afghan Mujahideen in their efforts to withstand aggressive Soviet Union occupation of Afghanistan. Other manifestations of the hostility between the two superpowers listed the space race as well as the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Finally the stress on the economies of the two countries became too much during the early 1990s, particularly in the Soviet Union since the hassle of sustaining such an expensive and useless war compelled the Soviet economy into failure and the empire broke up. The United States had won the Cold War by sheer will to endure and stubborn refusal to give in. This is a seldom spoken element of the American spirit but it is one which the Soviets realized to their personal disaster not to test. With any luck , no other “superpower” will ever think they are outfitted to test it again.
