Marvel comics Civil War Timeline?
I really want to get back into comics asap and I’ve read parts of Civil War and loved it! I’m pretty sure it was released as a comic and is now available as a paperback in more like a collection. I’ve been researching for a bit now about the timeline and I’m alittle confused? Do I have to get some comics AND all the paperbacks? I was really hoping I could just buy them all in paperback… If someone could post the chronological order of the books I should be trying to obtain I’d appriciate it. I’m really only concerned with the main storyline, I can always go pick up the side stories later. So again, my question is what is the ordering of the paperback collections and do they contain the whole storyline?
If you just want the main story, all you really need to buy is the main paperback collection: ‘Civil War’. That contains all the major storybeats from the Stamford incident that started it all to the final battle on the streets of Manhattan. If all you want is the Main story, that’s all you need.
If you want to hear more in depth stories of certain characters and what they were up to or how it affected them, then you can try the other collections. Many of those weave in and out of the major events as depicted in the main book, however, they will rely on you having read or also reading the main ‘Civil War’ book to know what’s going on with the war at large.
Some books are better than others, as well, and some comics will have more important stories tha others depending on which characters you’re interested. For instance, the X-Men largely stayed out of the war so their books aren’t really going to have a large impact either on the war or the X-Men’s ongoing storylines. Iron Man, however, was drastically affected by the war and his book will give you more of a sense of what he was going through (as will the New Avengers Civil war book), but the main Civil War book will contain their major contributions to the war.
I would suggest reading ‘The Road to Civil War’ which contains the amazing prelude one-shot ‘The Illuminati’, the main ‘Civil War’, ‘New Avengers: Civil War’, ‘Amazing Spider-Man: Civil War’, and finally ‘Iron Man: Civil War’, which contains a briliant and heart-breaking coda to the war by the same team who did the ‘Illuminati’ called ‘The Confession’.
