Need help on a civil war paper !!?
ok i am writing a paper on what caused the civil war but i am confused about on thing did the north have slaves during the civil war? if so why was the north call a “free” states? and if a state was “free” what did that mean ? and when new states were added what was the difference between a “free” and “slave” state?

Slavery, was like the gay marriage issue of today, most people have strong opinions and the federal government is leaving it to each state to decide. As a result, most of the northern states had become “free” states and the south’s economy was based on slavery so most of them had kept slavery. The issue was that each new state as the US was growing, would decide on their own also. This cause a huge bloody war in Kansas and they tried to compromise until finally Lincoln was elected president. The south saw him as a abolitionist and chose to secede from the union. Thus started the Civil War. Understand also that until this time, people thought of the US as a United Nation type of organization that many states belonged to and they had every right to quit if they wanted. Lincoln wanted it to hold together. The Civil War did weld us all together in that we mostly all consider ourselves “Americans” from this state or that state instead of a Virginian, or Georgian, or whatever.
