Do you agree this a good article of what the Civil War was really about?
http://www.nps.gov/archive/gett/gettkidz/cause.htm
btw Its from the gettysburg national military park.
Jimmy JAzz- No the bulk of the article is not dedicated to slavery. And certainly not “slavery” in the context you interpret to be as.
Yes. Slavery, which is what the bulk of the article is dedicated to.
The reasons given with respect to the tariffs and sectionalism were reasons for antagonism between the North and South but were not reasons for secession. We still have regional differences in this country and arguments that certain policies benefit one area more than another, no one suggest war as a way to resolve these differences.

Indeed it is. Of the first 5 paragraphs, which are dedicated to the underlying causes, 3 deal with slavery.
I constantly see people try to argue that slavery somehow had nothing or very little to do with the Civil War. That is was all about the poor Southerners fighting to remove the cruel oppression of the federal government. The South fought to preserve their right to have slaves. The other ’causes’ people trot out are just window dressing to try to hide that.
Here’s a portion of the so-called Bill Of Rights in the CSA Constitution:
“No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed.”
This was so important they listed it before freedom of speech, right to bear arms, etc…
Now let’s see what the VP of the CSA, Alexander Stephens, had to say:
“The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution African slavery as it exists amongst us the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution.”
“Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.”
