Here is a brief on the Battle for Stone River (aka 2nd Battle of Murfreesbro) and these are Northern terms; to the South this was simply The Battle for Murfreesbro.
Union General: Major General William S. Rosecrans
Confederate General: General Braxton Bragg
Location: what is properly known as “Middle Tennessee”.
Date: 31 December 1862 to 2 January 1863
Reason: Sort of chance in a similar manner to Gettysburg in July of 1863.
Outcome: Draw. Siding with the Union on this battle due to the morale booster it provided after a rather lousy showing on the battlefield overall in the year of 1862.
Effect: Allowed the Union to fight on for another day by motivation of showing they could in fact “win” occasionally. Gettysburg of course at this time was merely 6 months away and General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson would have merely 5 months to live (unbeknownst to him at the time of course).
