Maine Gives Help With College Tuition
The population of Maine is slightly over 1.3 million. In other words, there are quite a few American cities with more people than the eastern most state in the country. At the same time, Maine has come up with a series of scholarship programs that fulfill many of its citizens needs, as well as keep them from crossing the state line.
Like many states, Maine has its version of the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship. It then doubles the options with the Senator George J. Mitchell Research Institute Scholarship. In both programs, nominees are actually selected by their secondary school. From there, the applicants are judged on scholastic scores. Those who are awarded the Byrd receive $1,500 a year. In the case of the Mitchell, it’s $5,000 a year. Another thing both programs have in common is they can be applied to any school of choice. There is unlimited amounts of information about scholarship information on the web.
The Maine chapter of the American Legion doesn’t offer one, but two different scholarship plans. The first is the Children and Youth Scholarship. High school students who are citizens of the state must provide evidence they not only deserve the $500 they would receive for their academic record, but also for citizenship that’s above the norm.
It also administers the Daniel E. Lambert Memorial Scholarship. It is only available to children or grandchildren of war veterans. Again, they need letters of recommendation as well as grades. The amount varies, and is determined by the society itself. Educating yourself all you can about student scholarships means making good decisions.
Another area the state offers its share of scholarships is in occupation-related aid. One that is very unique is offered by the Maine Innkeepers Association. It’s open to high school students who intend to study hotel administration or food management and cooking. It can go up to $2,000 and can be applied to vocational centers as well as universities.
Those interested in any form of engineering should look into the Maine Society of Professional Engineers program. Again, it is aimed at state secondary students interested in anything from computer and electric to civil and other engineering specialties. It awards $1,500 for Associates and Bachelor’s degrees.
Those thinking about health care should look into the Doctors For Maine’s Future Scholarship. This financial aid package will cover 50% of a university’s tuition as long as it doesn’t exceed $25,000 annually. An applicant should also graduate from a state secondary school as well as attend one of Maine’s institutions. Looking into more information about free scholarships and grants will work in your favor.
Lastly on the occupational-oriented scholarships, Maine also has the Quality Child Care Education financial aid package. It is open to people who plan to pursue in an occupation in early childhood development, education or other form of childcare. The program will provide $500 per course; $2000 annually. There is also one important proviso, and that is the student should also raise $6,600 independent of the scholarship.
