The US Civil War was fought when the population was about 40 million. The war casualties totaled about 4 million, or about 10% of the total population. The losses in the Civil War were greater than in any other war the US has ever fought, even when its population was much greater.
Economically, the North emerged stronger than ever; the South was ruined.
