Earning Your Degree Online Is Easier With Financial Aid
The Commonwealth of Virginia places a lot of importance in delivering a quality education. It boasts its share of excellent institutions. To make sure a proper number of local citizens have a shot at enrolling to these schools, the state has also set up its share of scholarship programs. Reading about scholarships schools will prepare you and ease the transition into college.
The thing is, these scholarships aren’t only based on academic merit. They include competitions, good citizenship and others forms of rewarding potential students. The assistance also might not be completely state-bound. For example, the Horatio Algier program is also open to the state of Maryland and Washington DC.
To start with, there’s the Lee-Jackson Scholarship. This program is as much an exercise in state pride as it is a test of a high school student’s knowledge of local history. To participate, an entrant must write an original essay on either noted civil war generals Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson. While the award varies depending on the quality of the essay, in 2010 the state handed out 24 students $1,000 each for any four-year program of the student’s choice.
Like a number of other states in the U.S., the Commonwealth participates in the Robert C. Byrd program. This scholarship has high school principals nominate top students of a graduating class. If the Byrd review committee agrees with the school administrator, the applicant is awarded $1,500 to any college in the U.S.
As noted before, the Algier Scholarship is open not only to Virginians, but residents of Maryland and the District of Columbia. Like the infamous 19th Century novels, a candidate must have risen up from a “life of hardship.” They must not only have gotten a 2.0 or better grade point average in high school but have participated in meritorious service to their community that would be considered a cut above everyday good citizenship. For their charitable efforts, the recipient will bet a $2,500 a year scholarship to the school of their choosing.
Recognizing the country’s need for more people in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) professions, five of Virginia colleges have come up with an organization called the Space Grant Consortium. This group offers an array of about six or more scholarship packages, ranging anywhere from a basic $1,000 a year to as much as $8,500. It also has a $5,000 fellowship for post-graduates. The only other proviso is the student must go to one the five universities. Staying up to date with the latest facts about scholarship grant will be valuable and can uncover more options for assistance.
The Space Consortium isn’t the only one looking towards stocking up on future employees. Virginia’s Department of Transportation is also doing something similar. They have a program in order to give them a steady supply of civil engineers. It will provide as much as $7,000 a year plus a summer internship. It also can be applied to any college offering an accredited degree tract.
And this is just a small handful of the various scholarship programs the Commonwealth has to offer. Taking the time to research school scholarships and the many programs that are available can help to make college more affordable.
