Okay, so here’s the question: Name a specific technology advancement and explain how it helped.

Ooh, balloons are a good idea, Michael.
The Henry Rifle – called by Confederate troops “that damned Yankee rifle they load on Sunday and shoot all week”. The breech loading, repeating rifle gave the Union troops that used it (it was never issued, but was purchased privately by soldiers) a tremendous advantage in fire superiority.
Balloons – fixed (tethered) hot air balloons allowed commanders to see (through the observers in the balloons what was happening on the battlefield even when it was clouded by gun smoke, and to observe the movement and disposition of enemy troops – a huge advantage before rapid communications were available.
