how was life on the homefront during the civil war?
im doing a paper on the differences between northern and southern cultures during the civil war
The only way to get an accurate idea is to actually read about it in diaries, letters and books written by the very peoiple who lived on “the home front” during that conflict. There are many such written works.
There were an incredible variety of experiences had by these folks. In the north, there were people who lived exactly as they had before the war, as if the war didn’t even happen. Then there were northern folks whose lives were torn apart by the war. It depended upon where you lived, what your economic and social status was before the war, and whether or not you had relatives directly affected by the conflict.
In the south, there were far fewer folks who were able to go on living as they had before the firing on Fort Sumpter. Many more folks than in the north found their lives absolutely devastated. Many lost everything they had except for the clothes on their backs. A great many simply starved to death, unable to buy, beg, steal or catch something to eat.
Here’s a couple book titles that’ll get ya started:
The Children’s Civil War by James Marlen
Everyday Life During the Civil War by Michael J. Varhola
The Women’s War in the South edited by Charles Waugh and Martin Greenberg
And don’t forget – you can Google the topic for even more – lots more – references!
