Civil War Headstones

civil war headstones
Great Grandpa served in the Civil War?

We found his headstone, and there was no date of birth or death. It also says 16th Iowa but does not state what division, infantry etc.
Is this just how they did headstones back then?In the Civil War did they have Divisions,Brigades,Infantry, etc.and how can you find out these details for a individual person?

I would like to also say that i was very touched to see a flag at his resting place. It means so much to know he is not forgotten!Thank you to everyone that volunteers to do this on Memorial day and everyday.

It would appear that your Great Grandpa died in the Civil War or fairly soon following it. This is indicated by what it written on his headstone. To find out more, you can visit your local Historical Society either in or around your local Library which may also be connected to a Genealogical Society. These three will be your best source of local information. Other information may be gained by your State Historical Society in your State Capital.

Yes, they did have divisions, regiments, brigades, infantry, cavalry, etc. during the Civil War. The person who started it off in a given city or county was given command of what ever organization he could muster. Depending on the numbers was the basis for his rank. Generally these “commanders” were the most influential and most likely wealthy person in the area. Participation was not required but peer pressure often made for reluctant and timid soldiers which resulted in desertion on a regular basis.

Generally it is the American Legion which is responsible for the flags being placed upon the graves of all veterans going back to the 1st Revolutionary War, as it is currently being referred to as. As well as you, I also wish to publically thank them for placing the flags on the graves of those who gave their most to our country. Some of whom gave their lives so that we may live in a free country. It truly breaks my heart to see what they paid for with their blood to be squandered away because half of our country is convinced the government should pay them NOT to work.
