French in origin and design, it was known as a kepi. There were several different types and it came in standard grade materials (meaning fairly shoddy) for enlisted men and much better quality for officers.
In the Western theatre of the war, both sides favoured slouch hats more than the kepi, since they offered better protection against sun and rain.
