How were the prisoners punished if they were caught escaping?
This was in the civil war. Elmira prison to be specific…Thanks in advance
Especially if you took time to answer it.
Here is an excerpt from a prisoner who escaped Elmira.
“About twilight we saw a man pass and go under hospital No. 1. It proved to be James W. Crawford (not yet a member of Traweek’s tunnel organization). The prison authorities threw a guard around the hospitals, 17 in number, and captured Crawford, took him out and court-martialed him, sentenced him to a dungeon during his imprisonment.”
Mind you, Elmira was only open for a year and still had 25% prisoners die.
