Years and years ago if you stepped into a kitchen back then, you may not recognize it to the kitchens of today. Many things are vastly different from before the civil war. It was unheard of for men to be in the kitchen and many women had a great amount of help to run her kitchen. Servants would help prepare the meals for everyone in the household. However many things began to change after the war, electricity was the herald to new important steps in kitchens all over the world.
With the invention of dishwashers, ovens and stoves, a large portion of their time was saved in kitchens. Refrigerators and microwave ovens were next to be created. The microwave just happened to be a bi-product of another invention. A happy accident if you will, as it seems to have created a revolution within the kitchen for many families.
Since then there have been many improvements, other items were created to help people spend less time working and more time enjoying family time. Men have now taken a more prominent role within many kitchens and it is not unheard of to see a man taking food out of his ge microwave.
In the beginning they were large bulky appliances however the microwave of today can perform many tasks. An over the range microwave can be a fan, a light, a way to warm, thaw or cook food, as well as a timer to ensure you do not burn anything in the oven or stove. They are more compact and able to be mounted flush with the cabinets so that the power cords are well hidden away from view.
The reality is that anyone can use them, even your children can be taught the correct way to utilize them. It is very important for them to learn early on that there can be dangers to using microwaves if they are used incorrectly. For example if they decided to use your bundt cake pan to make you a cake in the microwave, serious things could occur.

It may be wise to make up some game where they can identify things not to place in the microwave before they are permitted to use it.
You also may decide that it would be a good idea to talk about how to make sure you are not burned while taking things out of the microwave as well as fire safety. Things you should do just in case there is a fire. While you can take all the precautions and teach them how to handle microwaves, it is still a good idea to supervise them while they use it.
There are many different styles of microwaves to select from and they all come in varying materials and colors. You can get one that has all the functions that you need or you can get a basic one. You may chose from one that has dials or something that displays digital and has buttons that you can press. Some are even designed specifically for those individuals that have disabilities so that they can use them as well.
