What Happened to Sarah Ballou and Her Children During and After the Civil War?
On the PBS video, “The Civil War,” an excerpt of a very moving letter, written by Sullivan Ballou, was read. It describes the conflict between his love for his wife and children and his duty to his country. Sullivan Ballou died during the First Battle of Bull Run. Does anyone have information on what happened to Sarah and the two children after his death? Serious answers only, please.
When he died, his wife was 24. She later moved to New Jersey to live out her life with her son, William, and never re-married. She died at age 80 in 1917.
